Day 13 - Camino Day 2 : Rabanal - Ponferrada - 24/9

Buenos días or buenos tardes depending when you are reading this.
Dawn over Rabanal

Day 2 started early. I began walking at 8am after buying a banana and mandarin for breakfast at the corner supermarket in Rabanal.  It was dawn and as I was leaving admiring the sunrise over the church of this little town, I met Andy- who became today's companion.

Andy is English, living in Worchester in the midlands. Not far from Stratford. He had been walking the Camino one or two weeks at a time over the last 3 years with friends. This year he is going to finish it by himself. I had a great day with Andy. We talked about many things including soccer, music, anorexia, homosexuality, sexual abuse - all topics he knew a bit about.

Andy and I at the Iron Cross - featured in the movie "The Way"
- where pilgrims place a stone in remembrance of departedloved ones

We met others on the way as well. Ann and her son Matt from Canada. Äsa, a female Lutheran priest who had been listening to her 80s music along the way. A group from Melbourne walking to raise money for mental health. German ( pronounced Hermun) a Spanish guy from Madrid. Also bumped into other people Andy knew as well as Rose, Amelia and Caroline who I had met yesterday. There were a lot on the Camino throughout this stretch so we were passing people and being passed by people all the time. "Ola" or "Buen Camino"s everywhere.

Today's journey was upwards to the highest peak on the Camino (but only 300 metres from where we started) for the first 10 kms and then downwards for the last 20 kms. It was a lot after the 20 kms of day 1. Boy am I sore now ... and tired.

Ponferrada

Andy and I both ended up quite a big town called Ponferrado where Andy was booked in to stay in a hotel. I went on to look for an aubergue but couldn't find one, so after half an hour of searching, I went back  to the same hotel. I'm typing now in a pizza shop where I have had some tortellini. Soon back to bed because seriously - I can hardly move

A touching scene at El Acebo
Adiós amigoes.
