Day 1 the flight over and Singapore 12/9

I'm off. After a lot of waiting around at Melbourne airport. Lining up. Having my identity questioned at border control- how exciting. I thought I was on a reality TV show. Until I realised this was reality- the one hour long delay

Finally we ascended into air where we were fed - good I'd skipped breakfast - and gorged on TV - Game of Thrones season 6 - and movies - nice guys - no nice and a Jane Austen story - this was very good - funny- but was it called "Love and Friendship" I think. Was fed some more and 7 hours flew by.

The real highlight of the trip over was the stopover in Singapore. Seven hours I had scheduled and was lucky enough to have two lovely hosts to give me a whirlwind tour of parts of the city.

Krishnan and Sukun are the parents of our friends, the Van Galens newest son in law. They met a bewildered man confused about all things "airport" about an hour after the plane landed. Then off we went. Two trains in to Little India , where the food was delicious.

.

and the night market busy and full of exotic fruit and spices.

Then a train to another part of town where watched 8 buses go by in about the same amount of time - apparently this was a long wait - and a top deck front row bus trip through the glitzy part of town.

A stroll around the streets and a walk through a shopping centre that was quite busy for 8:30 at night on a public holiday- at least I thought so. Then three more quick train trips back to the airport and a memorable dessert in cosmopolitan food hall in basement.

By the time I said goodbye to Krishnan and Sukun I had been treated to as much a tourist visit to Singapore as we could possibly have squeezed into 4 hours ... And a taste of what good hospitality really does look like.

The plane trip to London was 13 long hours.  A friendly English woman two seats away and a spare seat between us made a long night more pleasant. Dawn out the window over London was inspiring. Dawn on my first day in Europe.
